Adaptive Physical Ed.
Students in the Work Skills Center run The Cotting Cafe, where they practice retail skills such as running a cash register, customer service, and teamwork. Work Skills students also work on assembly projects and clerical skills. Project Bridges is a community based program in which students sample a variety of volunteer internships to help them identify their interests and gain work experience. At Cotting, the art program is designed to nurture students’ creativity, promote self-expression and foster the development of art appreciation and aesthetic growth. Projects are adapted to each child’s cognitive and physical abilities. Recently ceramics were added to the art program with the purchase of a new kiln. Art exhibits, usually held off-campus, instill a sense of pride in students. Fitness and good sportsmanship are the hallmarks of Cotting’s adaptive physical education program. Rules and techniques are adapted for each individual student, and teamwork and good sportsmanship are stressed, skills which build self-esteem and can be translated into many life experiences.

Other Programs
Continuing the School’s early history of industrial education, woodshop remains a beloved class for students of all ages and abilities. Equipment and projects are chosen specifically for the abilities and interests of shop students. Recent projects have included birdhouses, chessboards, and a memorial bench in honor of a student who recently passed away. Through the Supplemental Services Program, boys and girls at Cotting can explore new hobbies and forms of self-expression. The offerings change constantly. Recent Supplemental Services courses have been Drama Club, photography, Chess Club, jewelry making, winter sports, and Chinese cooking. The popular “Circle of Friends” is a Friday evening social outing group for middle and upper school students. * Home Economics
